George Joseph Vrabec Sr. (Smokey), age 79, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 19, due to natural causes. Smokey was born on April 1, 1944, in Clarksburg, WV, to Lucy (Rollins) and Joseph Vrabec. From the age of 9, he was raised by his stepfather, Lonnie Nazelrod. He graduated from Canton South High School and worked his entire career as a teamster truck mechanic for Sugardale (Freshmark) Foods. In addition to his parents and stepfather, Smokey was preceded in death by his wife Pam, brother Paul, and sister Ann. He is survived by his close friend and loving sister Helen, sisters Susan Kisamore and Jean Vrabec; mother-in-law Becky McQuiston; his best friend and son, George “Jay” Vrabec Jr. (Karen), daughter Georgia Headley (Keith); grandchildren Rachel Erickson (Keith), George “Joe” Vrabec III (Jamin), Allyson Headley, Ian Headley (Haley), Gabe Jones, and Gillian Jones; great-grandchildren Mason Joseph, Emma Headley, and Kasen Vrabec; nine nieces and nephews; and countless family and friends who will miss him dearly. Smokey enjoyed being outdoors, frequent bicycle rides, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with his sister, Helen, son, Jay, and grandchildren. He was extremely generous with his time and talents, was a jack-of-all-trades, and could be counted on to help with yard work or repair anything needed. Calling hours are Friday, October 27, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Sanders Funeral Homes in East Canton. A reception will be held immediately following at the Varian Orchards Apple Barrel. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Refuge of Hope or the MAPS Air Museum.
