James E. Canter, age 83, passed away on July 13, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital after an extensive battle with cancer.
Born on February 26, 1943, in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late James and Esther Canter. He graduated from Timken High School with the class of 1961.
At just 18 years old, James knew he had met the love of his life, Wanda. They were united in marriage on March 30, 1963, and shared more than 63 wonderful years together, building a loving family with their three daughters.
James dedicated more than 35 years of service to Republic Steel before retiring. He was incredibly intelligent, known for his spontaneous spirit and adventurous heart. His family fondly remembers the surprise road trips he would plan with little notice. Traveling brought him great joy, especially during the last eight years when he was able to share many adventures with his family. He especially loved visiting Michigan. James was also an avid NASCAR fan and never missed a race, faithfully recording any he couldn't watch live.
Above all, James' life was grounded in his faith in Jesus Christ. He and Wanda were devoted members of Sanctuary Church of God.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Thompson; his brother, Larry Canter; his son-in-law, Carl Slagle; and an infant granddaughter, Tabitha.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Wanda; his daughters, Shirley (Mike) Stout, Debbie Slagle, and Joanie (Thomas) Razum; his grandchildren, Steven (Tanya), Jeff (Belita), David (Rachele), Steven (Katie), Brytnea, and Tiffany; 17 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Matthew (Rose) Strogen, Mikey Strogen, and Cindy Howell; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Sanctuary Church of God, 6535 Maplebrook St. NE, East Canton, OH 44730, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Stewart officiating. In accordance with James' wishes, cremation will follow.
