With love and fondest memories, the family of James Ladson (fondly known as Jim) announces the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother who peacefully departed this world on Monday, April 15, 2024, in Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center, located in Canton, Ohio. Born on August 26, 1939, to the union of Joshua Ladson and Julia Ann Singleton-Ladson-Davis in Sumter, South Carolina. James lived a life filled with love, dedication and unwavering commitment to God, his family and his work.
Jim was a 1957 graduate of Lincoln High School in Sumter, South Carolina. He continued to further his education at South Carolina State University for two years. Because of his love for his country, he decided to enter in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country from 1959 to 1967. His honorable discharge allowed him to return to his beloved community, where he built a life centered on love, family, and friendship. On September 1, 1963, he united in marriage with the love of his life, Dolores Punch and they created a home filled with love, warmth, and care. He continued to further his education at Duquesne University, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
James was a valued employee of the Timken Company in Canton, Ohio while there he furthered his education at Akron University and earned his Masters Degree. James dedicated 32 years of his life as an accountant and as a senior college relations manager, drawing many gifted and talented people to work for Timken. He formed lasting friendships, leaving a mark through his exemplary service in the roller bearing and steel industry. However, Jim’s dedication to his job never overshadowed his love for life’s pleasures, which included, spending time with his family, church, traveling, golfing, cooking and grilling. Cleaning his vehicles was a daily event, as well as keeping his lawn manicured and shining his shoes weekly for church. James was very active within both 9th Street Church of Christ and Northwest Church of Christ. He served in many capacities, most notable as a church Deacon. He enjoyed and loved visiting the sick and shut in. He was always willing to lend a hand to help those in need.
James not only dedicated his life to family, church, and his work, he was also part of several different organizations in the community. He spent 26 years as a trustee of the Canton Student Loan Foundation. Jim also served on the executive board of the National Association of Colleges and Employees. He was a past president of Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers and past president of the Stark County Christian Academy. Jim also was an active part of the United Way of Greater Stark County serving on the Human Resources Committee.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Antonio Scott Gracia; sisters; Lucille Ladson-George and Mereese Ladson; brother Richard Leroy Holland.
Jim enduring love will be sustained by his loving wife; Dolores, his children; Jamella Ladson McNeill and James M. Ladson, all of Canton. His memory will be forever cherished by his sibling; Frank D. Ladson, Ike Ladson, Catherine (Franklin) Fogle and Jewel Davis Moten. His legacy will be honored through his six grandchildren: Isaiah James Ladson, Elijah James Ladson, Eleesha Marie Ladson, Khimani Dushon McNeill, Leilani Lee-Marie McNeill and Gary Parker. He shared an unbreakable bond with a score of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
As we prepare to bid farewell to Jim, let us remember the joy he brought to our lives and the love he shared with us all. May his memory forever shine bright in our hearts.
In his honor, a public viewing will be held on Friday April 26, 2024 starting at 11:00 am. at the Northwest Church of Christ at 38th Street NW Canton, Ohio 44718. A Celebration of Life will start at 1:00 pm. officiated by Pastor John Wright. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Garden with military honors and a committal ceremony.
