Martha H. Schoonover

Martha Haines Schoonover, aged 97, of Louisville, formerly of Canton, passed away May 19, 2024. She was born June 7, 1926 in Robertsville; Ohio to the late Noble and Carrie (Klopfenstein) Clapper. Martha was a 1944 graduate of Minerva High School. She attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. She was employed at Macomber Steel and later at Ashland Oil, retiring in 1991. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church. Martha had many interests but her favorites were traveling with her family to the Outer Banks and Disney World, participation in numerous card clubs, and bingo at St. Joseph's Care Center. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful role model to them by living a life of grace, gratitude, and quiet strength; especially as she battled Parkinson's Disease for the last 10 years.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, William C. Haines in 1990; her sisters, Marjorie Rue and Muriel Saur; and Thomas Schoonover. She is survived by two sons, Larry (Judy) Haines of Clayton, NC; William K. Haines of Lisbon, OH; daughter, Kristine (Emil) Alecusan of Canton, OH; four grandchildren, Kevin (Mellie) Haines; Julie (Joel) Bennink; Diane Alecusan; Elaine Alecusan; three great-grandchildren, Cassidy Haines; Sam Bennink; Jack Bennink.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at St. Joseph Care Center for their loving care and compassion over the last 4 years and to Crossroads Hospice for their exceptional care over the past month.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 24, 2024, at 10:30 am. in Robertsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. West, Canton, Oh. 44702. Please designate Camp Wakonda on your donation.
