Norma May White

"You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone," are the famous words of Norma May Maurer White.   At the young age of 94, Norma passed away of natural causes on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Altercare Country Lawn, Navarre.   She was born on Valentine’s Day 1927 in Dover, Ohio to the late Edward and Cleo (Patterson) Maurer. She was named after the famous actress Norma Shearer. She attended Dover High School and then moved to Canton where she also attended Canton Lincoln High School and was a graduate in 1945.  At the age of 16, her first job was at Taggart's Ice Cream.  Later Norma met her husband James at a local bar in Canton and then was married October 22, 1949, at Saint Mary's Church of Canton.   Norma and James had five wonderful children and began making many traditions.   She was a stay-at-home mom until she began working in the cafeteria at Canton South High School in the 1970's while her kids attended the same school.  Everyone at Canton South loved her and called her "Momma White."  Later she worked in personnel at Aultman Hospital and retired May 25, 1990, after 16 years of service. She was a devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #5024. Some of Norma's biggest passions of life besides her family was golfing at Spring Valley Golf Course, playing Euchre, and Solitaire.  Norma loved traveling.  She went on multiple cruises and traveled to Hawaii, Nags Head, Myrtle Beach, and Orlando.  But most importantly was when she visited the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with her husband.  Norma and James loved the Upper Peninsula.  They would spend a week every summer with her daughter Christine and son-in-law, Art.  Norma was excellent at making pies and breads.  The taste of her homemade spaghetti noodles, pizzellas, and Italian cookies will forever live on, especially her homemade lasagna.  Spelling our English language came simple to Norma.  She could spell anything and everything correctly even in her 90's.   When signing holiday cards, you may have noticed that her cursive handwriting was the best.  She always signed the holiday cards with XXX OOO.   "Always happy and never sad," her daughter Mary said.  "She made our Christmas's the best."  "A fire was always going, and cinnamon rolls were in the oven when we arrived for the holidays," said Christine. Dancing Polka and the Jitterbug were a favorite of Norma's per Christine. Little Kings beers were her preferred drink, but she would sip on some Jim Beam once in a while.  At 94, she was still sipping on a cold Little Kings beer with her boys Joe and John.  She had the best sense of humor and was also a spit fire. Taydon (great grandson) loved watching "Gun Smoke" with her.  Sometimes they would watch Tiger Woods play golf.  He loved her so much.  Bobby (grandson) loved taking her to watch movies and having her spend the night at his house.  Bobby had a special bond with his Grandma Norma.  Jimmy (grandson) loved when she would visit Michigan.  Norma would always wait on the front patio for him to get off of the school bus.  Luke (grandson) loved the "Dunkie Eggs" she made him in the mornings while visiting.  Alyse (granddaughter) loved the nights of playing cards, eating at Italo's, and having a few Little Kings.  Gabe (grandson) loved that she taught him how to play golf at Spring Valley as well as Norma's son, John.  She also bought Gabe his first set of clubs and golf shoes.  Breonna (granddaughter) loved visiting her grandmother, cooking, cleaning, and going out to lunch with her.  Breonna loved her bed bug bites on her neck as well as the little tickles going up the stairs to bed on 53rd Street.  Oh yes!!! 53rd Street will always be a wonderful memory.   Heather (granddaughter) can't think because her list would be 18 pages long!  Heather also was asked what her mom Anita would say to Norma.  The response was, "Welcome Home Mom!"   Albert Scavelli, the husband of Norma's daughter Anita says, "Every week, Anita would take Norma to dinner and a movie after work.  Al would ask, "How did it go?"  Anita would respond that she had such a good time!  Anita would always have a big smile on her face seeing her mom so happy.  Anita enjoyed every moment with her mom.  Anita's husband Al also said, "I often visited Norma after my Anita passed.  We would play Gin Rummy and Norma would kick my butt.  Norma would get tired of keeping track of who dealt and who's turn it was. She was sharp!"

Norma is preceded in death by her husband, James (Bianchi) White in 1993; one daughter, Anita Scavelli (husband Albert Scavelli living); two sisters, Lois Mullaly and Geraldine Widder. Norma is survived by four children, Christine (Art) Wright, Mary (Dennis) Cooper, Joseph (Kim) White and John (Krissy) Bianchi; eight grandchildren, Heather, Gabe, Breonna, Alyse, Loukas, Courtney, Jimmy, and Bobby and five great-grandchildren, Taydon, Trey, Thad, Issac, and Averie.

John (Norma's son) would say, "I'll see you next time!"   Norma would say, "Which will be the best time!"

Friends and family will be received Thursday September 9, 2021, from 6-8pm in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. A chapel service will be Friday at 10:00am in Calvary Cemetery, Massillon. Condolences or fond memories may be shared online at www.sandersfuneralhomes.com.
