Paul J. Sigmund Jr

Born in Barberton, OH on July 12, 1935 to Paul J. and Magdalene Sigmund. Paul was a Stark County resident most of his life. He had attended Melscheimer one-room schoolhouse and was a 1953 graduate of Canton South High School. Paul was also a graduate of DeVry Technical Institute and the U.S Army Signal School at Ft Monmouth, NJ. Paul retired from the Ford Motor Company in January 2000 and is a member of UAW Local 542. He is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Margaret (Margie) and his parents, Paul and Magdalene Sigmund. He is Also preceded in death by his sisters, Helen (Ronald) Moore, Theresa (Edward) Huckels, Mary Anne (Charles) Bytheway, and Barbara (Edmund) Costello. He is survived by his brother, David (Kathleen) Sigmund; son, Anthony (Michelle) Sigmund; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1958. He took basic training at Ft Knox, KY and advanced training at Ft Monmouth, NJ. He was then assigned to the 232nd Signal Company at Ft Huachuca, AR. From there he was assigned to C Company C 8th U.S. Army Signal Long Lines Bn in Taejon, Korea serving as a communications controller.

He was then reassigned to B Company S L L Bn in Teague, Korea as Chief radio repairman for the company. He then returned to Ft Knox as a radio repairman. After receiving a top-secret security clearance, he was assigned to the 7th Signal Bn Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe near Paris, France. While in France, he operated, maintained and trained British Army Reservists to use microwave communication equipment. From France, he was assigned back to Korea to C Company Signal Long Lines Communication Bn and then to Kunsan AFB. After a short stint at Kunsan AFB, he was reassigned to D Company Signal Long Lines Communications Bn in Seoul, Korea as site chief located at Namsan Hill Communications terminal for the 8th U.S. Army. After nine years and three months with the Army, and holding the slot as Sergeant First Class, he decided to become a civilian. Paul worked as a construction and maintenance electrician with several companies in Canton, OH. He finally retired from the Ford Motor Company working at the Canton Georgetown Rd plant, Lorain Assembly and lastly with the Kentucky truck plant. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 24, 2021 at 11:00 am in St Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton with Fr. Patrick Manning as Celebrant. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 am.
